Best Continue Education for Telebehavioral Health

The Telepsychology Best Practices 101 training series is an introduction to the ins and outs of real-world telepsychology. Each 2-hour webinar details the competencies needed for telepractice, including critical ethical, legal, clinical, and technical issues, together with reimbursement strategies. The series discusses practical ways to leverage a variety of technologies with a focus on video conferencing. As an introduction to the field, this training series outlines a variety of routes to reach more people, to lower your overhead and to focus on the specialty area(s) that interest you most. Presenter

Marlene M. Maheu, PhD Marlene M. Maheu, PhD, has been a technology-focused pioneer since 1994. As the executive director of the Telebehavioral Health Institute, Inc., she has overseen the development and delivery of online training to professionals worldwide.

Maheu has served various organizations to assist with the development of technology-focused standards and guidelines, including the American Telemedicine Association, the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association. She serves as the founder and executive director of the Telebehavioral Health Institute, Inc., which offers a certificate in telehealth. She is the CEO for the non-profit Coalition for Technology in Behavioral Science (CTiBS). She has authored five telehealth textbooks, including a text in press for graduate students; the APA-published, A Practitioner's Guide to Telemental Health: How to Conduct Legal, Ethical and Evidence-Based Telepractice (2016), and Career Paths in Telemental Health (2016).

Maheu consults with medical groups, clinics, agencies, schools, community mental health clinics and group practices as well as technology start-ups seeking to develop or expand telehealth services.

Segment 1: Clinical Evaluation and Care: Cultural Competences; Documentation

At the core of telehealth is evidence-based clinical service delivery. This introductory webinar outlines key research that provides strong evidence-based models for psychological assessment and treatment. Basic competencies covered include referral processes, cultural issues, documentation requirements, safety protocols and how to effectively involve family members or friends. Common barriers such as telesupervisor reluctance, administrative disorganization, and anxieties about working with technology are addressed, along with possible solutions. Segment 2: About the Tech…Video, Email, Text Messaging & Apps

Choosing technology for telepractice can be complex. Knowing how to think about, select, set up and use technology can be vital to success. Video, email, text-messaging, and app selection issues will be outlined in order to help the psychologist conduct a focused needs assessment of telepractice goals and objectives. The webinar will cover related competencies, such as how to assess and document realistic patient needs, abilities and preferences; ask the right questions of HIPAA-compliant vendors; prevent telepractice burnout; find supportive communities and resources, and more. Segment 3: Legal, Regulatory & Ethical Rules of the Road

Legal and ethical telehealth is available to millions of Americans. Key legal, regulatory and ethical issues are reviewed with a focus on essential, practical and successful telepsychology. APA and other relevant standards and guidelines are outlined. Telebehavioral interprofessional competencies are identified. Issues included are informed consent, HIPAA, HITECH, privacy and confidentiality (including conducting Google searches), text messaging, email, working with integrated teams, providing telesupervision and working over state borders both nationally and internationally through PSYPACT and other approaches. Segment 4: Getting Paid: Reimbursement Strategies & Marketing Your Professional Services

In late 2018, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported that 85% of all reimbursement for telehealth was paid to telebehavioral health practitioners. Third-party carriers also pay for telehealth in most US states. Professionals seeking proven telepsychology reimbursement strategies will benefit from understanding how to use common telehealth-related CPT and modifier codes for assessment as well as treatment. They will be exposed to recent CPT code additions for remote patient monitoring, virtual assistants, and interprofessional collaboration. This webinar will describe how to use several federally-funded telehealth resources to get not only set-up, but network geographically to maximize income potential.

Those wishing to improve their online marketing strategies will learn several effective and ethical strategies as well as what to avoid. Web development suggestions and social media strategies designed to minimize risk and maximize exposure will be described. Examples are drawn from real-life marketing campaigns in telepsychology to illustrate adherence to legal and ethical requirements.
